The show on 23rd October forms part of their Freedom tour.

Hailing from Soweto, South Africa, the choir were formed in 2002 and feature some of the best vocalists and performers that the rainbow nation has to offer.

The choir blends traditional Gospel music with a uniquely African spin, drawing on their experiences with faith and growing up in South Africa’s democratic movement and it’s struggle for freedom.

Bongani Ncube and Mary Mulovhedzi, two leading figures in the choir said they were “looking forward to performing in Birmingham with every fibre of their bodies”.

Bonging added that African gospel music had a special connection with audiences: “I think because it uses a lot of culture, meaning that there is not much difference between how you live back home and what you sing about, so, putting the two together, your culture and the actual music itself and the rhythm Africans generally have, putting it into gospel makes it unique.”

Mary added: “We will be shining to your eyes and to your heart too. We will be melting each and every heart. We will be healing defiantly, that’s the one thing we try to do the most.”

The concert has been promoted as a part of Birmingham’s Black History month celebrations, a fact that both say they find important.

“When it comes to our history for the longest time it was hidden from the world. People only knew that parts they wanted them to hear,” Bongani said.

“Now we are free to speak about it, we find it necessary and important for the rest of the world to know about it.”
