The Ukrainian Sunflower restaurant in Wednesbury opened last year and has already been visited by Prime Minister as well as local residents and the broader Eastern European community.

The bistro serves handmade food from the owner’s homeland and employs only nationals from the country.

The founder, Yuliia Kryvenko, said that after the Prime Minister’s visit the business has welcomed customers from different corners of the West Midlands such as Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall and Bilston.

Yuliia Kryvenko met with the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, one month after the opening.

She said: “Different communities find our food tasty – Lithuanian, Latvian, Polish, Slovakia, Moldova and others.

“And of course we have British customers too!

“Our Eastern European customers say their food is similar to ours, that’s why they enjoy it so much.

“We wanted to give an opportunity to Ukrainian people, because it is not easy to find work in the UK, especially when you don’t know the language.

“Also it is great for our kitchen, because Ukrainians know very well how to cook Ukrainian food and that’s what we sell.”

Since the start of the war more than 204,000 Ukrainians citizens have moved to the UK.

In order to support their homeland, the Wednesbury restaurant collects donations to support the army and those impacted by the conflict.

Yulia said: “The collection is still ongoing – when the box is full we’re planning to buy something for the army.

“We know reliable organisations, so we have a clear understanding of where the money goes.”

Not only has the restaurant been visited by Eastern European residents, but also by West Midlands locals too

One person leaving a review online said: “It’s the first traditional Ukrainian restaurant in Birmingham area and has really Ukrainian recipes, good homemade food, cakes and fantastic tea.

“It’s a very nice place with good prices and delicious food. I will definitely visit again.

“There are profits being donated to help the awful crisis in Ukraine so please go and visit and support a fabulous local business.”
