Today is the 5th annual #NationalPopcornDay which celebrates all things related to the tasty treat.
Popcorn has been around for thousands of years and while the snacks full origin is yet to be determined, it has steadily become a popular snack through the centuries.
The West Midlands even has a local popcorn manufacturer on its doorstep. Cornpoppers was established in 1979 in Wednesbury and was an independent manufacturer before being purchased by Kettle Foods in 2017.
The age-old snack has become synonymous and iconic with movie goers. To celebrate, we have compiled a list of 5 great movies being shown in Birmingham’s independent and franchise cinemas to enjoy with your favourite flavored popcorn.
1: Disney and Pixar’s latest animated movie is bound to make you go loco for Coco.
The latest movie from the legendary animators follows the journey of 12-year-old Miguel who is desperate to become a musician. Miguel must travel through the land of the dead to find out the secret history of his family and achieve his dream of becoming a musician.
2: The Electric Cinema in Birmingham is screening The Darkest Hour featuring award winning actor Gary Oldman.
The movie tells the story of Winston Churchill’s most difficult trial during World War as he explores a peace treaty with Nazi Germany.
3: The Everyman cinema located in Birmingham’s Mailbox is showing Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
The film is a dark comedy that follows the journey of a grieving mother whose daughter is murdered. After months of no progress on the case she paints three controversial billboards to provoke the local sheriff’s office into action to solve the murder.
4: The Disaster Artist is top billing for the Mockingbird Cinema and Kitchen in the Custard Factory.
The film is biographical comedy based on the life and times of Tommy Wiseau who wrote, produced, directed, filmed and starred in The Room. A movie that is considered one of the worst films ever released.
5: If you’re looking for an enjoyable musical inspired popcorn fest, then you could check out The Greatest Showman.
The historical period musical is inspired by the P.T. Barnum’s creation of the Barnum and Bailey circus in the 19th century America.
