Cyrille Regis with 3 Degrees statue

This weekend’s Premier League matches saw a minute of applause and black armbands worn by players in memory of the Three Degrees footballer, Cyrille Regis.

Tributes and messages poured in, describing him as a “pioneer” and a “torch bearer for black players in the 1970’s” after his death on 14th January. He died from a sudden heart attack at the age of 59.

There was much criticism towards the Premier League and English Football League for not issuing a league-wide tribute sooner. This resulted in a statement from the Premier League confirming it would hold a tribute for all matches last weekend.

Regis played for several clubs including West Brom, Coventry and Aston Villa, and won five England caps.
