An exhibition of jewellery inspired by a poem is going on display in Birmingham.

Streets Paved With Gold will run at Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery until 5th January.

The exhibition has been created by tutors and students at Masterpiece Academy, which aims to break down barriers to the jewellery industry for young people and those on low incomes.

The showcase is inspired by the Streets Paved with Gold poem written by Nancy Edith Burrell, who worked in the Jewellery Quarter after arriving in the UK in the 1940s.

Kate Thorley, senior lecturer at the School of Jewellery, said: “Learning from different cultures and history enriches student experience and knowledge of a global jewellery industry.

“Visitors are given the opportunity to see the enduring legacy of jewellery skills handed down from the Windrush pioneers through the next generation of designer makers.”

The exhibition is free to attend.
