England has gained over 900 health and fitness centres since 2010, according to an analysis by Birmingham Eastside.

Analysis of Sports England data showed an increase of 916 health and fitness centres nationwide since 2010 — a 51% increase.

These figures include all fitness and health centres with at least one workout station.

Paul Johnson, clinical fitness national lead for Nuffield Health, said: “There is such an intrinsic link between mental health and physical activity, and there will always be some form of mental health benefits that come from going to the gym.

“Gyms can also be incredibly social, with people training together in classes or encouraging each other on free weights. Following the isolation of the pandemic, gyms are a great way to surround yourself with lots of like-minded, health-seeking people, and can help with connection as you become part of a community.”

Birmingham was the local authority that saw the most health and fitness centres built in its area since 2010, with 59, followed by Leeds and Bradford with 35 and 33 centres respectively.

Birmingham City Council has been approached for comment

Lewes, North Kesteven, North Warwickshire, South Hams and South Norfolk all built just one health and fitness centre during the 12 years.

Women-only gyms on the rise

Across the country, 20 women-only health and fitness centres have opened since 2010.

The growing demand for women-only exercise spaces comes as a result of an increased number of reports of sexual harassment, feeling intimidated, and feeling uncomfortable.

Gym user Meg, speaking to the BBC about the gym harassment she has experienced, said: “At first, you sort of shrug it off and you’d like to think it’s not forwarded with that intention. But, as it becomes more regular, you start to feel angry, a lot more self-conscious and you feel quite paranoid about it.”

Health and fitness centres are not the only facilities that have seen an increase since 2010. Artificial pitches and cycling facilities have increased rapidly, according to an analysis from The Guardian. Swimming pools, however, have witnessed a steady decline.
