The Lord Mayor of Birmingham will lead Birmingham’s Holocaust Memorial Day commemorations on Sunday (27th January). Counsellor Yvonne Mosquito will host the ceremony at the Council House to commemorate victims and survivors of the Holocaust. Testimonies from survivors, Courtenay Harris and Hannelore Napier, will be heard, along with music and prayers. Doors open at 1pm, and the ceremony begins at 2pm.
A new events space in Digbeth has been granted a premises licence by Birmingham City Council. The River application was accepted earlier this week (Monday 21st January) at the Licensing Subcommittee meeting. The business model proposes “it is envisaged as an experimental venue which can be used to curate a vibrant spectrum of diverse, cultural events and experiences.” Plays, films, indoor sporting events, live and recorded music, as well as wrestling entertainment, are all expected to be held at the venue. A gin distillery in Selly Oak has been granted a premises licence by Birmingham City Council. The Sin of Gin Limited received the go-ahead in the Licensing Subcommittee meeting yesterday (Monday 21st January). The business joins the trend of distilleries opening in the UK, more than 199 operating distilleries have opened in the country over the last eight years, according to figures published by the Wine and Spirit Trade Association. A meeting about polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is being held at the Gurdwara Guru Nanak Parkash Temple in Coventry next month. Cysters has partnered with the Temple to hold a discussion that aims to create a safe, confidential environment for women in the Asian community to discuss reproductive health issues. The charity, which was founded four years ago, provides support for black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) women with gynaecological issues including PCOS and endometriosis. Thousands of campaigners and trade unionists gathered this weekend to attend an anti-austerity protest ahead of the forthcoming Conservative Party conference in Birmingham. The protest, which took place on Saturday, was organised by the Trade Unions Congress (TUC) and the People’s Assembly. Union leaders, local MPs and officials from campaign groups addressed the rally in Victoria Square before leading the march through the city centre. A statement from the TUC said that the demonstration was organised to highlight how austerity policies have affected Birmingham City Council, with budgets being cut by 40%.
