Funding awarded to West Midlands’ institutions in 2017 reached its lowest point since 2010, an analysis by Birmingham Eastside shows. According to the data from 360Giving, the total amount awarded to West Midlands’ organisations in 2017 dropped by 44% compared to the previous year. Over the last decade, regional funding increased sharply between 2010 and 2012, but it has been decreasing since then. The region has lost 79% of the aid since a peak of funding in 2012. A BBC analysis reveals that there is a strong correlation between avoidable mortality and the level of deprivation in an area. Mental health support for adults and older people in Birmingham has reduced by 90% in the last financial year 2017-18. According to the figures gathered by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism early this year, Birmingham City Council budgeted £1.8 million, lower than the previous £19.4 million spent during 2016-2017. A report released by Shelter today has shown that one in every 88 people in Birmingham do not have a place to live.
