Wolves boss Gary O’Neil says forward Matheus Cunha “feels good” and is “eager to get back to work” after picking up a significant injury against Brentford in their 2-0 defeat at Molineux.

The Brazilian has been in fine form this season, scoring 11 goals for the Old Gold, including a hat-trick against Chelsea away at Stamford Bridge earlier this month.

However, Cunha was forced to limp off in the 20th minute against the Bees.

But O’Neil said he was hoping the issue would not rule him out long term.

“Its a hamstring injury with a little bit of muscle damage in the middle of the muscle,” the Wolves boss said. “He’s really optimistic and feels good.

“There’s not too much pain there and he’s keen to get straight to work and start pushing and get back to helping the team as soon as he can.

“We haven’t set any timelines because he’s feeling really good with it.

“We obviously know there’s an injury there, but symptom-wise and pain-wise he’s feeling very good and we just want to give him every opportunity to keep pushing as hard as he can.

“We respect the injury and the symptoms and how it progresses, but it is important we allow Matheus opportunities to work really hard and get him back as soon as possible.”

On a positive note for Wolves, South Korean Hwang Hee Chan is set to return for tomorrow’s clash against Spurs, after a calf strain halted his comeback to the squad after reaching the semi-finals of the Asia Cup.

“Channy is completely fine,” said O’Neil. “His calf was a little bit sore last week but he’s not feeling it at all anymore. He’s done a couple of full day’s training.

“Unless I get any surprises after this press conference then Channy will be fine and available tomorrow.”
