Aston Villa Women will face off against local rivals Birmingham City in the Women’s Super League this weekend.

Struggling Villa could overtake their opposition with a convincing win in the match.

Aston Villa sit 10th in the table, just three points clear of bottom-placed Bristol City. However, Villa have the luxury of having two games in hand over many teams around them.

Birmingham City currently lie 7th in the table, three points clear of Villa.

Despite trailing them in the league standings, Villa will head into Saturday’s game in high spirits after beating Brighton in their last fixture.

Their 2-0 win last weekend away at Brighton was Villa’s first of the season and helped move them off the foot of the table.

City didn’t fare quite as well last time out with the Blues losing out 2-1 to a West Ham United side that sit below them in the table.

Blues manager Carla Ward, who won Manager of the Month in October, will be hoping her side respond with a win away to their fierce rivals on Saturday.

City will look to striker Claudia Walker for inspiration.

Walker has been in great form of late, bagging five goals so far this season. Her manager sung the striker’s praises after the disappointing defeat to the Hammers.

Speaking to the club website after the defeat, Ward said: “She has so much quality and ability and is also a great girl who works so hard, she is always wanting to do more.”
