Work taking place on the HS2 station in Birmingham

An agreement has been reached between a union and a company in charge of developing Birmingham’s Curzon Street Station.

The deal between MaceDragados and GMB will grant access to the workforce building the station so they can recruit members and reps.

Construction of the landmark station began in 2021 with works taking place preparing the area.

Under the agreement the union will also be granted access to the site in order to ensure standards in health, safety and wellbeing are well maintained and accounted for.

Charlotte Brumpton-Childs, GMB National Officer, said: “We are proud to have reached an agreement with MaceDragados.

“Workers win when unions are given access to the workplace.

“We look forward to meeting new members and recruiting reps to further strengthen GMB’s involvement in the HS2 construction.”

The deal was struck against a backdrop of uncertainty around the HS2 project after the Prime Minister’s decision in October last year to axe the northern leg of the project, ending the route in Birmingham instead of Manchester as had originally been planned.

Work on the station facade will begin in summer 2025, with construction of the roof and steelwork set to start in the following autumn. Operational testing will run from summer 2026 to Autumn 2028 when the station is due to open.
