Stafford Rangers midfielder Tom Tonks is targeting glory as his side prepare to face Stoke City in the Staffordshire Senior Cup semi-final.

Rangers have won the cup 13 times, most recently against Rushall Olympic in 2019 and 12 months before, beating Hednesford Town.

The Marston Road club are looking to repeat their triumph after the competition was postponed the last two years due to COVID-19.

Stafford have been in great form throughout the season, sitting in 11th in the Northern Premier League after a recent run of 13 games unbeaten away from home.

Tonks said: “Every game is important to me – the next game is always the most important. Stafford are unbeaten in the competition for a number of years so it would be nice to keep it going and if we don’t end up making the playoffs it is always nice to win trophies.”

Tonks himself has ten goals in 35 league appearances and will be looking to add to that in the cup against Stoke tomorrow night (Tuesday 29th March).

The midfielder said: “My form has been okay; it could have been better. I’m my own biggest critic and I put blame on myself for not helping the team higher up the league, that’s the type of player I am. The gaffer has given me a bit more freedom to get forward and make things happen with the attacking players.”

He also added manager Matt Hill had been influential in the club’s form this season. Hill played more than 450 games during his professional career for the likes of Bristol City, Preston North End and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Tonks added: “He’s been fantastic for everyone – I have nothing but praise for him. He’s someone I’ve watched as a kid, and he has played so many professional games at several clubs so it’s hard for him not to have an influence.

“We go into every game believing that we can win, regardless of who we play. There isn’t any special formula, just hard work, belief and doing what the coaching staff ask us to do.”
