Redditch United defeated by Alvechurch FC on penalties

Redditch United were defeated by Alvechurch on penalties in the semi-final of the Worcester Senior Cup.

Matt Clarke made four changes to the lineup from the victory against Halesowen, with Musa Ceesay in for Gift Mussa and AJ George in for Jack Concannon in the midfield.

There was also a full change in attack with both Jaiden White and Alex Cameron replacing Johnny Johnston and Danny King.

The first chance fell to the Reds in the sixth minute when Alex Cameron won the ball high and laid it off to AJ George, but his driven effort took a deflection and spun behind.

Alvechurch came close to taking the lead in the 18th minute when Clayton Phillips curled a close range free kick narrowly wide of the top corner.

Jaden White then stormed down the right-hand side with great drive into the box, but his effort was easily held by the keeper.

Early in the second half Leo Brown had an effort on goal which went wide after a deflection. The resulting corner was dealt with easily by Redditch and a quick counter saw Alex Cameron through one on one, but Ronnie Hollingshead produced a good save to deny him.

Clarke’s men were looking the much sharper team and were more threatening in attack, with George’s curling free kick headed on by an Alvechurch player to force the keeper to tip over the bar.

There was not much action in the rest of the second half as both teams knocked the ball about nicely but struggled to get it right in the final thirds.

Late on, DJ Campton-Sturridge received the ball in the Redditch box and attempted an ambitious lob over Adam Harrison but was just over.

The final ten minutes saw lots of chances for the Reds to take the lead. Alvechurch just about survived a goalmouth scramble after George whipped in a dangerous corner, and the away team struggled to clear before Hollingshead eventually claimed.

A minute later, Redditch were screaming for a penalty as Johnston chased a back pass and appeared to be taken out by Hollingshead, but the referee gave a corner kick.

In the final seconds of the game, the home side could have won it after Alex Cameron was inches away from Johnston’s cross.

The penalties saw Campton-Sturridge find the top corner with a brilliant finish, but loanee Jordan Cranston’s effort was denied by Hollingshead.

Jack Hallahan slotted home to make it 2-0 to Alvechurch – and things got worse for Redditch when George’s strike was also saved.

Joshua Dugmore stepped up to convert his penalty before Aran Soleman finally got the Reds off the mark in the shootout.

But Leo Brown scored the winning penalty to send Alvechurch through.

Redditch United will be looking to continue their great league form at the top of the table with their next game against Berkhamstead at home this weekend.
