Last academic year, Birmingham’s schools had an average of one teacher for every 19 students, according to new government data.
This figure has risen by one since 2023, when the average was one teacher for every 18 students.

This statistic reflects the overall student-to-teacher ratio within the whole school rather than the ratio of students to teachers per classroom.
On its website, the teaching recruitment agency Vetro describes the need for recruiting more teachers as:
“As more children enter the education system, schools are under pressure to deliver high-quality learning experiences.
This not only necessitates more Teachers but also Teaching Assistants, SEN Support Staff, and specialists who can address diverse learning.”
