The number of people dying in care homes has decreased between 2019 and 2022. Across England and Wales 133,332 deaths were reported in 2022, roughly 5000 less than in 2019.
Annual data for 2022, released by the Office for National Statistics in November, highlighted fewer deaths of care home residents in all regions, including 44 fewer in the West Midlands.
Over the same period, the number of people living in care homes has also decreased. Recent data from Statista estimated the care home population at nearly 400,000 in England and Wales. In investigating trends, carehome.co.uk found that many homes have closed since the pandemic.
