Birmingham City manager Aitor Karanka is looking to field veteran midfielder Mikel San José for the first time as his side face Stoke City this weekend.

The former Liverpool midfielder, who joined the Blues on a free transfer, has spent the last decade in his home country with Athletic Bilbao.

He has been seen as a quality signing by the Blues faithful with the side capturing a star who has graced La Liga for ten years.

Boss and fellow Spaniard Karanka told Birmingham Live:

“He is under consideration for Sunday and has trained with us all week. He’s a quality player and with all his experience he’s ready to be in the squad.”

San José is a welcome addition to Birmingham’s midfield following the £20.7m sale of teen sensation Jude Bellingham to Borussia Dortmund.

However, the Basque star has the challenge of splitting the partnership of Ivan Šunjić and Adam Clayton who have helped the side to an unbeaten start in the EFL Championship.
