Arjun Singh was attacked on Long Row in Nottingham just before 4am on Saturday, he died in hospital the next day.
A man has been charged with manslaughter, whilst another 2 male suspects have been arrested.
A vigil took place in memory of Arjun on Wednesday evening where the incident happened.
Deepa Singh from the community group Sikh Youth UK, helped arrange the event:
“It hit the hearts of a lot of people across the UK, not only just in Nottingham and Derby where he is from
“We spoke to some local Sikh organisations and gurdwaras around the area who have helped this event come together but also to help students and people affected by this tragic event
“We really want give to strength and support the family.”
Attar Singh, President of the University of Nottingham Sikh Society said:
“We want to bring the community together to support Arjuns friends and family, the community has really come together on social media to show their support and I believe this has provided an opportunity to create awareness.”
Mr Singh was studying Sports Science at Nottingham Trent University
A spokesperson from the university said:
“We were shocked and saddened to have learned of the death of Arjun Singh over the weekend. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. We are liaising with the police and offering support to students and staff who may be affected by this news.”
