A grant of more than €400,000 has been awarded to academics in Birmingham to help them research refuges for victims of domestic violence. The money has come from the European Commission’s Rights, Equality and Citizenship programme will see staff from Birmingham City University’s School of Social Sciences work with other institutions in Austria, Bulgaria, Italy, Romania and Spain. The two year project will allow researchers Professor Morag MacDonald, Dr James Williams and David Kane will explore the needs of women and children living in refuge situations and help them to reintegrate into mainstream society. A worker from Walsall who left his employer with an £8million bill after starting a fire has been jailed. Adris Ali, of Kent Road in Walsall, was sentenced to four years at Stafford Crown Court for arson with intent or recklessness as to whether life was endangered. The court was told he lit a stack of papers at the Amazon warehouse in Rugeley where he worked after a disagreement with a team leader in November last year. A Birmingham charity is to receive a Royal visitor as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations. The Duke of Cambridge will visit Acorns Children’s Hospice in Selly Oak on 18th September as part of a tour of the West Midlands.
