John McGinn had put Dean Smith’s man in front at the Emirates Stadium after just 20 minutes.

And Villa’s task looked to have got easier after Ainsley Maitland-Niles was sent off just before half-time for a second booking.

But the Gunners fired back through a Nicolas Pepe penalty after Bjorn Engles had felled Mattéo Guendouzi in the box.

The lead lasted just a minute though as Jack Grealish’s powerful run and cross was touched home by Wesley on the hour mark.

Despite having the extra man, Villa began to defend deep and were punished for a mistake by Tyrone Mings’ defensive lapse inside his own box as Calum Chambers fired past Tom Heaton with nine minutes left.

Arsenal wrapped up what had looked an unlikely win six minutes from time when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s free-kick found the net.
