The keeper – who also appeared for Sunderland, Stoke City – had been playing for Melbourne City in the Australian A-League.

The 41-year-old joined Villa in 2003 and went on to make 139 appearances in a five-year spell in B6.

He made the announcement in a post on social media, telling fans he had enjoyed an “amazing journey”.

“It’s with great pride and a little bit of sadness that I officially announce my retirement from professional football,” Sorensen said.

“The time has come to reflect and then start a new chapter in my life.”

Tributes have come in from a number of Sorensen’s former team-mates.
