A recall of steak products from the Wetherspoon’s menu has led to an investigation of their supplier over non-compliance of hygiene regulations.
The products were recalled on Tuesday night as a “precautionary measure”, however the FSA (Food Safety Agency) knew about instances of “serious non-compliance with food hygiene regulations” at Russell Hume on 12 January.
All sites were investigated, including their Birmingham site. No products will leave the sites until the FSA are happy that the Russell Hume company can produce safe food.
The FSA added:
“ThereĀ is no indication that people have become ill from eating meat supplied by Russell Hume. However, we are concerned about the poor practices in place at their premises so that is why we have taken proportionate action to ensure no meat can leave their sites at present. We are continuing to assess the situation.”
Customers took to social media to vent their frustrations:

@jdwtweet Today I hear that all 900 pubs stopped serving steak due to a recall, however yesterday I ate an 8oz rump steak in Wetherspoons Sheffield. How can this have happened? Did the Sheffield Waterworks Company not comply with the recall? Am I going to be ill/compensated?

fresh from Whitby, last night provided us with another contender for 'Saddest Notice You'll Ever See In A Wetherspoons'. 'Steak Night' without the steak was an absolute blast last night… 😂😂😂 pic.twitter.com/Z1UDqXCtS3

A Wetherspoon spokesman said the chain was “completely unaware” of the FSA’s inspection or findings until now, and that the recall will cause some unavailability for the next few days.
