Around a hundred people gathered to protest outside Perry Barr’s recycling centre.
It comes folowing the ongoing bin strike which has lasted over a year, the longest in the country’s history.
Perry Barr was one of three locations for what is known as a “megapicket”, in which organisations, including Unite, Communist Vanguard and many more gathered at refuse sites.
It was the third event hosted on 30th January, the second taking place back in July and the first held in May.
Paula, who organised the event, said: “We managed to close all three sites down just by our coordinated effort. It took a few meetings, a lot of funding, but we managed to pull it off.”
Members of the Green Party were also present, including leader Zack Polanski, who made a speech before leaving to support his party’s efforts in the by-election in Gorton and Denton.
Lloyd Russel-Moyle, a former Labour MP who defected to the Greens in 2024, said: “I feel it was really important to see a leader of a national party showing solidarity with the bin workers.
“They are not just fighting for their wages but to stop the reduction go wages for all workers in the biggest local authority in Europe.”
High-profile politicians also attended other sites, with Your Party’s Zarah Sultana at Aslaf Depot and Labour MP John McDonnell at Smithfield.
BirminghamLive wrote that Council Leader, John Cotton, said in a meeting: “We are open to dialogue to find a solution. However, those points have to be non-negotiable – it would not be in the best interests of the taxpayers of this city if we were to do anything else.”
Ben Auton, who is running as councillor for the Green Party in Sutton Coldfield, said: “From the commissioner’s report, Birmingham City Council haven’t come to the negotiating table since July. This is ridiculous.
“We absolutely need to get a settlement sorted and get people back to work. The idea that people can lose £8,000 from their pay is absolutely outrageous.”
Early in January, Birmingham City Council said regarding the lack of negotiations: “We have also invited Unite on multiple occasions to make a proposal to end the strike, which we would fully and carefully consider, but they have declined to do so thus far.”
