Academic misconduct cases at a Midlands university involving artificial intelligence (AI) have shot up by 1,380% in just one year, according to data obtained by Birmingham Eastside.

The figures, obtained through a Freedom of Information request, reveal that cases where a student was found guilty of AI-related misconduct at the University of Wolverhampton increased from 11 in the 2022/23 academic year to 163 in the latest full year, 2023/24.

While the overall number of misconduct cases dropped over that period, the proportion of students found guilty of misconduct has risen, from 68% to 74% of cases.

AI-related misconduct now makes up almost a quarter of confirmed cases of misconduct at the university — up from just 1% a year earlier.
