Steve Clarke’s Scotland achieved Euro qualification last night after defeating Serbia on penalties.

The Scots will face England in Group D during next summer’s tournament, set to go ahead from June.

Aston Villa star John McGinn played the majority of the game, continuing his hot run of form from club appearances.

McGinn has starred in the centre of the park for Villa this term. The ex-Hibs midfielder has combined with Luiz, Barkley and Grealish to thrash Liverpool and Arsenal. McGinn sat out the majority of last season as Villa retained Premier League status by the skin of their teeth.

The Scots went ahead last night thanks to Ryan Christie with a pinpoint strike along the turf, bouncing off the right-hand post and in.

Clarke’s men dominated throughout most of the game. But fans’ celebrations were held off even longer as Madrid forward Luka Jovic equalised with a header in the dying embers.

In extra-time, Scotland stopper David Marshall made a crucial save to deny a long-range effort from Nemanja Gudelj.

The game went to penalties and both sides were efficient in putting their spot kicks away. Fulham forward Aleksandar Mitrovic was the last player to step up, following a successful strike from Norwich’s Kenny McLean.

Mitrovic’s penalty was saved by David Marshall to send Scotland to their fist major tournament since 1998.
