West Midlands Stories – episode 11

West Midlands Stories is a collection of documentaries and features produced by students from the Birmingham School of Media.

This episode features a documentary titled The Long Road to Recovery by Naomi MacKenzie.

Naomi investigates the psychological toll caused by the Iraq and Afghan campaigns on returning British Army personnel and speaks to veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She visits Phoenix House, a recovery centre run by the charity Help for Heroes that rehabilitates veterans suffering from physical or psychological injuries.

The series draws together an eclectic range of stories from across the West Midlands, tackling contemporary issues, introducing unique characters and showcasing the region’s rich cultural history.

The first season of West Midlands Stories was broadcast in 2012 on Switch 107.5 in Castle Vale, North Birmingham and went on to win the Bronze award in the Community Radio category of the New York Radio Awards.

The series has now relocated to Birmingham Eastside Radio, with an all-new season of documentaries, hosted by Matt Barnard and Georgia Price.
