The former Brentford boss will take charge of the team when they take on Swansea on Saturday in front of a sold out Villa Park.

The new manager will have defender James Chester back in contention after suspension, while the likes of Scott Hogan – who played under Smith for the Bees – may also be in line to play more of a part than he did during Bruce’s time at the helm.

Boyhood Villa fan Smith admits he’ll be keen to savour his first time in the home dugout.

“My introduction to the crowd will be the emotional bit for me,” he told the club’s website. “Then I’ll get my game head on and ensure the players are right to go and win the game.

“I’m really looking forward to it.”
