A charity has warned pet owners not to feed their dogs cheese due to an increase in obesity cases.

The PDSA said one cube could have the equivalent weight gain for pooches as 11 pancakes could have in humans.

The charity has joined with dog food firm Royal Canin to raise awareness of animal obesity in the UK through a Big Weigh In event which sees free appointments set up for pets to be put on the scales.

Vet Nurse Nina Downing said: “It’s important to understand that what we see as a small treat could actually be a huge amount of calories for our pets.”

More than 500 vets across the country will be taking part in the Big Weigh In, with the PDSA urging owners to take part.

Nina continued: “Overweight pets are more likely to suffer from health problems such as diabetes and urinary tract disease.

“Carrying excess fat can also worsen other health problems – such as arthritis and breathing difficulties – as well as increase anaesthetic and surgical risks.”

The PDSA website contains guides for wight loss for both dogs and cats along with a list of vets involved in the Big Weigh In.
