Giving a much-needed platform to small independent businesses, the exciting ‘Christmas in Cathedral Square’ market launches for the first time in Birmingham as an alternative to the city’s Frankfurt Market.
With more than 30 stalls offering food, drink, craft and gifts independent the market – a partnership between Birmingham City Council , Birmingham Cathedral, Colmore Business District and Danter Attractions – will run from November 17 to December 19 in St Philips Cathedral Square, otherwise known as ‘Pigeon Park’.
While larger stalls will run throughout the month, small business vendors have been offered the chance to sell their wares on a weekly rotating basis.
Founder and Director of Beki’s Brownies, Beki Vallance, said: “We are very excited to trade at the market, it is going to give us an opportunity to spread the word of the brand far and wide.
“We have really enjoyed being back at our events since COVID restrictions lifted and interacting with our customers.”
“After a difficult year for small businesses due to COVID-19 we’ve no doubt Christmas in Cathedral Square will be a huge success for all.”
The mother-daughter owned business is based in Warwickshire but trade with Digbeth Dining Club and at other independent Birmingham based events.
They will be selling their baked treats including truffles and salted caramel at the market from the week commencing December 6.
Jenny McCann, owner of Bear Bookshop, an independent children’s bookseller based in the West Midlands will be at the market from November 17 to November 28.
She said: ” We are very excited to show our beautiful selection of books including lots of Christmas themed stories to shoppers.
“They will make great gifts, keepsakes and stocking fillers for younger family members and friends.
“I think a lot of people are going to change their shopping habits after COVID and be more minded to think locally and support independence, I’m really hoping that’s what will happen here this year.”
Emily Danter is the Director of Operations at Danter Attractions Limited – a family run business which will be providing the infrastructure, groundwork and live music for the market as well as opening the largest ice rink in the West Midlands in Centenary Square.
She said: “We can’t wait to welcome everyone down especially to marvel at the 10-meter-tall festive Christmas tree and enjoy live music at the festive band stand.
“There is also an authentic ‘Pigeon in the Park Pub’ which has been purpose built for the market on the grounds of Birmingham Cathedral, so come on down and have a drink in the heated indoor area or outdoor balcony overlooking the cathedral.”
2021 marks the first year Christmas in Cathedral Square will be launched in the city and Councillor Ian Ward, leader of Birmingham City Council said: “The addition of Christmas in Cathedral Square bolsters an already strong programme of events in the city, which we hope people of all ages, from Birmingham and beyond, will come and enjoy.”
