Stephanie Slater was held in a wooden coffin for eight days by Michael Sams.

He had pretended to be a house buyer before kidnapping her in Great Barr. She was only released after her employers paid a ransom.

Sams, from Sutton-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire, was later jailed for life for the crime as well as the kidnap and murder of Julie Dart.

Following her ordeal, Stephanie went on to work with police forces across the UK to help them develop the way they worked with kidnapping victims.

She died after a short battle with cancer aged 50.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: “We would like to pay tribute to Stephanie’s courage and bravery over the years and for the work she did in helping police officers and victims by sharing her experience.”
