Awat Hamasalih, from Finchley Road, was found guilty on June 16th of being a member of a proscribed organisation (Daesh) and being in possession of articles connected with the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism.

Material relating to the terrorist group was found on a number of devices belonging to the 35-year-old, who had also posted on social media about Daesh and had contact with a person believed to be a commander of the organisation.

He was given a six year sentence for being a member of a proscribed organisation and five years for being in possession of articles for terrorist purposes. Both sentences are to run concurrently.

Chief Superintendent Matt Ward said: “On social media, Hamasalih claimed to be an ISIS recruiter and claimed he was able to help people with aspirations to travel to Syria.

“We will continue to protect local communities by working with partners and the CPS to pursue and prosecute all those who show support for illegal organisations such as so-called Daesh or who seek to spread hate and terror.”
