Wearing ceremonial robes, he addressed over 1,000 students from the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media at the first of a week of ceremonies at Symphony Hall yesterday (July 24th).

In his inaugural graduation speech, Sir Lenny said: “We live in uncertain political times, but in moments of great change, there are always opportunities.

“Almost 4,000 students will graduate from Birmingham City University this summer, with honorary doctorates being awarded to prestigious figures including international violinist Tasmin Little, founder and CEO of Teach First Brett Wigdortz, and acclaimed barrister Sallie Bennett-Jenkins.

“I hope that the skills, capabilities and knowledge with which you are all now equipped will enable you to seize on these opportunities; to create new jobs, new types of jobs and to build a new future for all of us, as your career and personal development goes forward.

“This really is your time – so go ahead and change it.”

The Dudley-born star’s next duty will be to oversee the Faculty of Health Education and Life Sciences graduation ceremony today.
