Every year thousands descend on Birmingham for Christmas events, but one local Brummie is trying to showcase the best culture that Birmingham has to offer.
Dean Brennan, the organiser behind Winter Social has spoken out about his inspiration to begin his new alternative to the Christmas German market.
“Birmingham has got so many great events on around the city, but very rarely in the middle of the city centre, they’re always on the fringe. There’s no question that the Bullring is a massive commercial space, one of the biggest in Europe, but that doesn’t have to mean it can’t host local talent too.”
The Winter Social has already won the praise of local traders such as award-winning Baked in Brick who named the event “fantastic” as it saw “independent traders coming together”.
Each Tuesday to Sunday from noon until 10pm, the event will be the host of local food traders such as Baked in Brick and Breaking Baps alongside locally brewed drinks from Sadler’s Ales and other traders. The balcony space at the Bullring will also be accommodating Birmingham-based DJs.
“Winter Social is for those who wouldn’t normally come into town during the festive season; for those who fancy something different; for those who want to support the myriad of cultures and counter cultures that Birmingham nurtures; for those who want great beer, great views, great music and great food!”
The Frankfurt Market has always caused controversy among brummies as to whether it benefits the community, but Dean Brennan is still supportive:
“I’m really impressed with the Bullring’s support for this in bringing independent, local companies to the ‘main stage’. People should go to the German Frankfurt Market if they want to, we’re not trying to replace anyone.”
Even if you don’t get a chance to head down to the Winter Social this year- there may be further opportunities, as Dean has hinted to us.
“Watch this space!” he said.
Brummies can find the event at Spiceal Street, by Selfridges, between the 1st and 24th December.
