Tributes have been paid to former Birmingham City goalkeeper Gary Sprake following his death.

The 71-year-old also won 37 caps during a 12-year professional career.

He joined Blues from Leeds United in 1973 for £100,000 – a record fee for a goalkeeper at the time – and went on to make 16 appearances for the club.

A back injury forced him to retire and he went on to become a council training officer in Solihull.

Birmingham City sent its condolences to the Sprake’s family earlier today:

Meanwhile, former club Leeds United said in a statement: “All the players, management, and staff at Leeds United sends its condolences and support to the Sprake family at this difficult time.”
